Thou Shalt Not Create Any Idols ~OR~ Give It A Rest

Reality t.v. indeed.

CTV announced it will shelve its other reality show, Canadian Idol, in 2009. Let me repeat: There will be no Season 7 of Canadian Idol.

This comes on the heels of the recently wrapped, highly rated So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

With advertising revenues expected to take a dive, its about preserving cash as the networks prepare for a recession.

"As a result of the current economic climate, production of Canadian Idol will rest for the 2009 broadcast year," said a rep for CTV.

The U.S version has decided to ix-nay Idol Gives Back, anticipating a weak turnout, thanks to the Recession. Maybe they should give it a rest, too. (Sorry, MAC.)

To be honest, I don't know why CTV doesn't axe the show altogether. Of the six Canadian Idols, only 2006's Eva Avila is enjoying any current airplay. Season One's Ryan Malcolm has been invisible for the last 5 years. Season Two saw Kalan Porter eclipse Ryan's Idol star by leaps and bounds, but who know where that little girl is now.

And true to form, only one third place Idol is enjoying success, and that's oddball Jacob Hoggard, the front man for Hedley.

As for the rest of them, who can say? I rarely pay attention anymore, and after Season Three, I stopped watching.
