Jaheem Herrera is the latest victim of schoolyard bullying.
Just one week after Carl Walker-Hoover took his own life, young Jaheem -also 11 years old- came home from school, went up to his room, and hung himself with a fabric belt.
Jaheem's stepfather said that they knew he was being bullied and had contacted the school to complain.
On the day he died, Masika Bermudez, Jaheem's mother, asked him about the bullying when he came home from school but he denied having any problems with bullies. She sent him to his room and Jaheem hung himself shortly after.
School officials and parents are responsible for the safety of these children, but we also need to find a way to treat the bully. Why is this child/children acting out? Why are they so threatened; why do they feel they can behave by a different set of rules?
And I wonder what the "protect-the-family" groups who were opposed to Day of Silence have to say about this.
Again, if you are reading this and you are bullied at school or you know someone who is being bullied, it doesn't have to continue. We can all make it stop.
This just angers me while just wrenching my heart at the same time.
