A Friend Of Who?

It was the winter of 1996 and I was enduring my second day at a new job. Three of the associates came up to me and asked, "So, are you a friend of Dorothy?"

"Dorothy, who? Are you talking about The Golden Girls?"

"Nevermind," and then they walked away.

I had no idea who or what they were talking about. However, on the third day, I came out, officially. To everyone at work; it felt like that safe an environment.

"So! You ARE a friend of Dorothy's!"

"Nope. Sorry. I don't know anyone named Dorothy."

One of the older homos took me aside and explained it. I still think it's a stupid phrase.
