Spring Cleansing

Sitting at my desk one afternoon a few weeks ago, I was surfing the Intertubes and listening to the radio. The afternoon host, Mike Chalut, of The Mike Chalut Show on Toronto's ProudFM mentioned that he's on "a cleanse." This made me prick up my ears, since my family doctor had just suggested to me not two days earlier, that perhaps I should consider doing a "detox."

I thought about doing one of those Greens + liver detox things, but deep down, I knew I needed a bit more. My cholesterol is a little high (that's something that you young gaylings won't have to worry about for awhile!), my liver enzymes are high, my blood pressure is a little high. Oh, fine...and I'm overweight.

So, I tweeted Mr. Chalut and he said that he was cleasing with Toronto's FitOrganix. I have to check this out, I thought to myself. But before I could even google FitOrganix, I got a tweet from company founder, Jules Lieff, who also appears every Monday on Mike's show. We quickly set up a time and place to meet so I could talk to her about FitOrganix and get some details about her new company.

Jules is a petite girl, 5'4", blonde, tanned and fit. I mean, F.I.T. And super-energetic, friendly, driven, and compassionate. We talked for an hour or so, and I was completely impressed.

Leiff has cornered something missing in the fitness and well-being market. "Everybody can get themselves to the gym --- how people eat is the hardest part to change." Girl, you're preaching to the choir! I can't tell you all how many times I've tried to "make that change" only to stumble, or not "have time" to cook, or let's be honest, not even be bothered to try and opt for finger cuisine (my code for pizza/thai/chinese delivery).

Jules partners with holistic nutritionist, Julia Karantjas, to create healthy food options and menus, but it doesn't stop there. There's also a chef on board to work with those food items who creates flavourful creations (no boiled chicken here!) that --and here's the clincher-- get delivered to your door every morning. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, all at your doorstep. FitOrganix does all this with a dedication to organic and local foods, farms, and environmentally sustainable products.

It's only fair to point out that one common roadblock to anyone trying to "hit their re-set button," as Jules puts it, is the level of committment to it. Is it hard? Jules will be the first one to tell you it is. She was the first FitOrganix cleanse client! But at the end of it? "I felt great! I felt ... balanced."

Balance is v. v. good in my books.

A bill to legalize gay marriage in Washington state won final legislative approval on Wednesday in a largely party-line vote that moved the state to the cusp of becoming the seventh in the nation to recognize same-sex nuptials.

Washington’s Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire said she looked forward to signing the measure and “putting into law an end to an era of discrimination” even as opponents, led by religious conservatives, vowed to seek its repeal at the polls in November.

The approval in the state House of Representatives came a day after gay marriage advocates won a key legal victory in California when a federal appeals court declared a voter-approved gay marriage ban in that state unconstitutional. (Reuters)

Uganda Anti-Gay Death Penalty Bill Reintroduced

(AP) KAMPALA, Uganda - The Ugandan parliamentarian who first introduced an anti-gay bill that carried the death penalty for some homosexual acts reintroduced the bill on Tuesday, raising concerns among rights activists who have been fighting the legislation.
Parliamentarian David Bahati first introduced the bill in 2009 but it has never come before the full legislative body for a vote. Though widely supported in Uganda, the bill's progress apparently has been slowed by an international outcry against the bill, including condemnation from President Barack Obama.
Bahati has said that homosexuality poses a serious threat to family values and that his bill has helped raise public awareness about what he calls "the dangers to our children."

Cameron Fraser has been modeling for 8 years, but isn't in too much of a hurry for his big break.

In the meantime, this Pasadena native is doing a double major in Physics and Applied Health. He has a gym that focuses on veteran rehabilitation and military preparation. Kids, this man is going to be a doctor someday!

He works out twice a day, the first being cardio that starts at 4:30AM!!

Well, according to PopCrush:

With kickoff for the gridiron game between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots set for 6:30PM ET, and each quarter running 15 minutes and accounting for stoppages of play, penalties and of course those notorious commercials, you can pretty much expect Madonna to take the stage for the halftime show at approximately 8 or 8:15PM ET....The entire Super Bowl will be streamed online for the first time in the event’s history, so this is a big deal and means even more viewers will be seeing Madonna entertain.

Earlier today, the U.S. Department of Justice laid waste to one of the internet's most popular file storage/sharing sites, MegaUpload.

From the LA Times:
"In a joint statement, the Justice Department and FBI called the action "among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States."...According to the indictment, the operators of MegaUpload earned more than $175 million in illegal profits and caused an estimated $500 million in harm to copyright holders.
The site is advertised as having more than 50 million daily visitors, according to federal authorities."

In other news, the hyper-political activist group Anonymous managed to hack into the FBI's website, along with several record label sites, in retaliation for the MegaUpload shakedown.

As you may or may not be aware, The Lisp almost exclusively used MegaUpload to share my monthly mixtapes and Glee updates. Those files are now ALL gone. Over 40 mixtapes alone are just -*gone*-

Personally, I feel that this takedown is a direct attack on Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Information. As Lisp reader Jon said, "What's next...book burning?"

Any futher mixtapes and gleek club updates will be put on hold indefinitely...

Scott Herman is a gorgeous model with an equally beautiful personality, who is definitely an A in the LGBTTIQQ2SA acronym --Allies.

He has used his boy-next-door, All-American appeal for many causes, and has long been an advocate for the gay community, being very vocal about marriage equality and human rights. He participated in Adam Bouska's NOH8 campaign and he encourages other straight men to be "REAL MEN" and speak up for human rights issues.

Being a fitness trainer and expert, he's also an advocate for healthy living, and this man's body is his billboard!

Everyone got their first taste (don't we wish!) of Scott during MTV's The Real World: Brooklyn, and he's definitely put himself out there ever since ...here's a whole slew of NEW images -- along with some older personal favourites -- of Mr. Scott Herman!

Excellent question. I guess I'd have to say that anyone that can be more, do more, or say more than someone that doesn't have the power, means or voice to deliver. Obviously, men and women serving in the military. Police and fire fighters. But truly, it's the "every-man" that tries to make a difference. People like Craig Kielburger, Terry Fox, or the 9/11 First Responders. These people are all heroes.

77. What constitutes a good night out for you nowadays?

Now that I'm just under 200-years-old, a good night is one that I make it through alive. No, seriously, I'm just happy spending the evening with close friends at someone's home with good food, nice wine, and super company. However, there is something to be said for a night watching Boys-In-Dresses! I ♥ a good drag queen!

78. Do you prefer musicals or "straight" theatre?

I'm afraid that I have to say I do love a good musical! All my favourite theatre excursions have been musical ones. I have many favourite shows (Rent, Avenue Q to name two), but one of the best nights I ever had was here in Toronto seeing An Evening With Mandy Patinkin and Patti LuPone. I sat 15-or-so feet from the stage and watched the Queen of Broadway sing Don't Cry For Me, Argentina. Exhilarating! As for straight theatre, I did see Twelve Angry Men. It was riveting.

79. Do you prefer going to bars (pubs) or restaurants?

Being a total foodie, I'd much rather go to an amazing restaurant and have a glorious meal than spend a night at a pub getting bloated on beer.

80. Do you have any unusual hobbies? Or collections?

No and no. I think my hobbies and collections are pretty normal. Strike that. I am a complete Digital Hoarder. Currently, I'm sitting at over 19,000 entries in my iTunes, and very few of those are videos/movies. This might not be the right place to say this but I will say that I think an amazing vacation would be to go storm chasing. With professionals, mind you, although a storm chasing vacation is ridiculously expensive!!!

81. Do you consider yourself a good lover?

Oh, goddess. Um...yes. I'm very much about touch and sensation and stuff like that. For me, giving pleasure isn't about the in n' out, if you know what I mean. For example, Poodle and I didn't "do" anything for at least two weeks after we started seeing each other. We had a "no fly zone" which encompassed the underwear area, if you will. I think I managed to create some rather scintillating moments with just my imagination and my tongue.

82. What's the hottest experience you've had at a bathhouse?

Oh, well this should be devastating, to say the least. For the longest time, I was absolutely not interested in going to The Tubs. I had a roommate that was always asking me to go with him, and finally I said yes. We went, got rooms and eventually separated. I was so uncomfortable, I closed my door for about 30 minutes. After I opened it, this super-cutie kept walking by my door and finally stopped and said, "do you want to come home with me and my friend?"

"Um...."

"No, no...you'd be coming with me, I'm just staying at his place."

"Um....I'm here with a friend, too. Maybe next time?"

Then my friend brought his trick into my room. Some sad sap with terrible B.O. and I wished to hell I had gone with that little twink.

World AIDS Day ~ Speaking Frankly...

I wondered what I would say today. I wondered all week and even today, literally at the eleventh hour, I've yet to post anything commemorating World AIDS Day, other than my red condom/ribbon background.

I thought that I might have to let the occasion pass with nary a word from me about the topic.

Then, I remembered a conversation I had at work today.

I work with someone, roughly the same age as me (almost three hundred years-old), and he's a dancer. Now, we all know that one of the communities hit hardest in the 80's was the theatre/dance/art/fashion scenes, for obvious reasons.

Today, he wore a red ribbon on his sweater and I thanked him for doing so. I would have done the same, but I'm not in a such a "customer-facing" role as he is. I would have worn Red, but that goes against my very specific dress code.

We had a very honest and frank discussion about what today meant for us. We're both HIV-; we've both engaged in activities in our histories that we knew were beyond risky; we've never "lost" anyone to HIV/AIDS that was close to us, but we've been affected by it and we both lived through the 80's and early 90's and "witnessed" the devastation of the disease.

Our conversation focused on something very real and very mind-numbing; the highest rate of infection is among 20 -29 year-old people.

Even for those who are 29, assuming that they became sexually active at 16, they would have been doing the nasty in 1998 (give or take a few years along with my terrible mathematics skills).

They didn't grow up knowing the same consequences that we did. They didn't live during "Silence = Death." They'd be hard-pressed to define ACT UP! They had no idea that President Ronald Reagan didn't utter the word AIDS until May 31, 1987 (near the end of his second term), at the Third International Conference on AIDS in Washington. When he spoke, 36,058 Americans had been diagnosed with AIDS and 20,849 had died. The disease had spread to 113 countries, with more than 50,000 cases.

We both shook our heads at the ignorance of the current generation behaving like a generation before them; invincible and perhaps viewing HIV as a controllable STD.

These young people were infiltrating bathhouses and websites and glorifying bareback sex. He recounted a past three week love affair when the object of his desire said, "by the way, I'm HIV+, and I don't like to use condoms." What started as a horny dalliance turned into a three week program of anti-HIV drugs along with a tortuous period of waiting until he could learn the results of his blood test.

This World AIDS Day also marks a decade of learning of the HIV status of two incredibly important people to me. One has been positive for only this past ten years; the other has been positive for approximately 15 years.

One takes medication; one does not. They are only 5 years apart in age.

What lesson can we share? We're so engulfed in marriage equality, but there are so many issues at stake.

As a middle-aged man, I often witness the joy and ribaldry of youth and I think to myself, "you're welcome," because if it weren't for me and for the generation before me, they couldn't behave the way they do, but what are we --as in MY generation-- teaching these kids about protecting themselves?

Far too little, obviously.

Jacques St. Pierre is a 17 year-old high school student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, which is just outside of Toronto.

He is one of too many people who have suffered the taunts of bullies and decided to do something about it. He organized an anti-bullying assembly at his school, but he also sent out messages to various celebrities, hoping they would be able to contribute in some way.

Lady Gaga answered that call. Here is the video message that she sent Jacques to play at his assembly.

Yes, I'm aware I'm a day late with this week's HUMP! but I just couldn't decide.

So, here's something a little different for the HUMP! day hottie --- a photographer!

UK photographer Andy Houghton is self-taught mostly, but learned a lot about photography from his father. "My inspiration to pick up a camera and start taking photographs came from my father, who was a passionate photographer while I was growing up in the 1980’s."

He also says, "I’m not interested in making the people I photograph look happy, beautiful or perfect, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. My images tend to be story telling yet emotionally isolating. I am mainly influenced by films and art, although the smallest and most random encounters in life are the true influences of my work. I take photographs of what I see and what I want to see."

Here Come The Bells ~or~ Why You Shouldn't Donate To The Salvation Army Bell Ringers

As the holidays approach, the Salvation Army bell ringers are out in front of stores dunning shoppers for donations. If you care about gay rights, you'll skip their bucket in favor of a charity that doesn't actively discriminate against the LGBT community.
The Salvation Army has a history of active discrimination against gays and lesbians. While you might think you're helping the hungry and homeless by dropping a few dollars in the bright red buckets, not everyone can share in the donations. Many LGBT people are rejected by the evangelical church charity because they're "sexually impure."
The church claims it holds "a positive view of human sexuality," but then clarifies that "sexual intimacy is understood as a gift of God to be enjoyed within the context of heterosexual marriage." The Salvation Army doesn't believe that gays and lesbians should ever know the intimacy of any loving relationship, instead teaching that "Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life."
On its webpage, the group claims that "the services of The Salvation Army are available to all who qualify, without regard to sexual orientation." While the words are nice, their actions speak volumes. They blatantly ignore the position statement and deny LGBT people services unless they renounce their sexuality, end same-sex relationships, or, in some cases, attend services "open to all who confess Christ as Savior and who accept and abide by The Salvation Army's doctrine and discipline." In other words, if you're gay or lesbian, you don't qualify.
The organization also has a record of actively lobbying governments worldwide for anti-gay policies - including an attempt to make consensual gay sex illegal. (Yes, you're paying lobbyists with those donations.)
After the break are some highlights from the evangelical Christian charity's recent anti-gay political lobbying, a handy video with more information, and a list of charities who don't discriminate against their clients and employees.

Since 1986 the Salvation Army has engaged in five major assaults on the LGBT community's civil rights and attempted to carve out exemptions that would allow them to deny gays and lesbians needed services as well as employment.

When New Zealand considered passage of the Homosexual Law Reform Act in 1986, the Salvation Army collected signatures in an attempt to get the legislation killed. The act decriminalized consensual sex between gay men. The measure passed over the charity's objections.
In the United Kingdom, the Salvation Army actively pushed passage of an amendment to the Local Government Act. The amendment stated that local authorities "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship." The law has since been repealed, but it led many schools and colleges to close LGBT student organizations out of fear they'd lose their government funding.
In 2001, the organization tried to extract a resolution from the White House that they could ignore local non-discrimination laws that protected LGBT people. While the commitment would have applied to all employees, the group claimed that it needed the resolution so it "did not have to ordain sexually active gay ministers and did not have to provide medical benefits to the same-sex partners of employees." After lawmakers and civil rights activists revealed the Salvation Army's active resistance to non-discrimination laws, the White House admitted the charity was seeking the exemptions.
Also in 2001, the evangelical charity actively lobbied to change how the Bush administration would distribute over $24 billion in grants and tax deductions by urging the White House deny funding to any cities or states that included LGBT non-discrimination laws. Ari Fleischer, White House press secretary, issued a statement saying the administration was denying a "regulation sought by the church to protect the right of taxpayer-funded religious organizations to discriminate against homosexuals."
In 2004, the Salvation Army threatened to close all their soup kitchens in New York City to protest the city's decision to require all vendors and charities doing business with the city to adhere to all civil rights laws. The organization balked at having to treat gay employees equal to straight employees.

I've seen the discrimination the Salvation Army preaches first hand. When a former boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army insisted we break up before they'd offer assistance. We slept on the street instead and declined to break up as they demanded.
Instead of donating to the Salvation Army, choose a different charity that will help everyone without prejudice. Find a local secular charity - or here are some national organizations that provide help to anyone who needs it:

Goodwill (disabled and unemployed)
The Red Cross (medical and emergency relief)
Doctors Without Borders (medical and emergency relief)
Habitat for Humanity (homelessness and housing)
